Trains and bicycles

station-dayTaking your bike on the train

Train companies have differing policies on carrying bikes.

If you're planning to take your bicycle on the train it's always best to contact the train company to book a place for your bicycle in advance.

Visit the train companies' websites to read full details of their policies on carrying bikes:

The National Rail Enquiries website also has a very informative page about cycling by train.

If you plan to take a bike on the train regularly, it's worth considering buyng a folding bike which you can carry as luggage rather than booking a space on most trains. Many companies manufacture folding bikes, the best known is Brompton Cycles.

Days out by bike and train in Shropshire

Catching the train is a great way to visit somewhere new to have a fun day out on your bike.

Cycle Shrewsbury's 'Days out by train and bicycle' leaflet contains lots of useful information on taking your children and their bikes on the train, cycle ride ideas and maps of the areas around Shrewsbury and Telford stations. Download the leaflet or order a hard copy here. Please note that Wrexham and Shropshire rail company ceased running services on 28 January 2011 therefore references to this company in this leaflet are no longer valid.

For more ideas for routes for cycle rides from towns in Shropshire which are accessible by train visit our leisure rides page.
