Advice for new cyclists

For advice on choosing what bike to buy, have a look at our buying a new bike section.

For advice on what accessories you will need check out our bicycle accessories page.

If you are a new cyclist and you feel that you lack the confidence or skills to go out on your bike, why not sign up to one of our cycle training courses. We provide training for both adults and children of all abilities.

If you already know how to cycle but you haven't done it for a while or you've not had much experience cycling on the road, here are some things to think about:

  • Plan your route – You'll feel a lot more confident if you know where you're going, how you are going to get there and what to expect on the way. The interactive maps on this website and the Shrewsbury walking and cycling map can help you pick the best route to your destination using recommended cycle routes. The maps also show you where you can park your bike. View our maps.
  • Don't try to do too much too quickly – Start with short rides and build up to longer rides once you feel more confident and you have boosted your stamina. You'll soon get used to cycling and find that it's an easy, quick and convenient way to get around.
  • Make yourself visible to other road users – It's a good idea to wear high visibility clothes, particularly at dusk or if you're cycling in the dark. Don't assume that drivers can see you.
  • Make things easier for yourself:
    • Don't try to carry anything too awkward or heavy to start off with. Get used to cycling around before you carry things which might affect your balance.
    • Wear comfortable clothing. You can pretty much wear whatever you want to ride in, but don't let impractical clothing affect your early rides. Wear clothes appropriate to the weather and use a bicycle clip or slappits to stop your trousers getting caught in the chain. Wear sensible shoes that won't slip on your pedals.
    • Pick a flat route with little or no traffic. You can find traffic free routes on our maps.
    • Brush up on your Highway Code. Make sure you're aware of what you should be doing and what to expect of other road users. If you're confused about the different types of cycle routes and signs, you can find an explanation here. Alternatively, take a look at the full Highway Code.
  • Cycle with a friend – If you're nervous about cycling on your own, go out with a friend or family member. If you don't know anyone who likes cycling, contact Cycle Shrewsbury and we will try to arrange someone to cycle with you. Alternatively, you can look for someone online at the Bike Budi website.
  • Enjoy yourself! – Don't worry, cycling is fun and easy. Once you've learnt how to ride a bike you never forget! Take it slow to start off with and before you know it you'll be riding longer distances and feeling more and more confident.

Regular cycling will make you feel happier and more relaxed and it will boost your energy levels. You can also feel proud that you are travelling around in a environmentally friendly way and helping to reduce congestion.

Feel good, get going!
