Meet Richard, the cycling coach

richard-stephensThe latest addition to the Cycle Shrewsbury team started work at the beginning of  March. Richard Stephens will be working as our community cycling coach. He introduces himself here...

Who am I?

I am a very keen cyclist and fitness enthusiast. I previously worked for the Royal Navy and during the past 5 years I qualified as a Level 3 Certified Personal Trainer, 'Spinning' instructor, Level 2 British Cycling 'Go-Ride' Coach and Level 2 British Cycling Track coach.

To enhance my knowledge, I have also been studying for a Sport Science degree with Manchester Metropolitan University (due to complete in Jun 2011).

richard-on-bikeAt the same time I have also managed to compete in various road races, take part in an  'Etape du Tour' (112 mile ride following the same route as a professional stage of the Tour De France), various 'Sportives' and on one occasion the World Masters Track cycling championships (points race).

What will I be doing?

Having left the Royal Navy, I am now working as the Community Cycling Coach. The post is partnership between the Schools Sports Partnership and Cycle Shrewsbury (Shropshire Council).

I aim to visit as many schools as possible during term time to deliver structured coaching sessions for all cycling abilities. This includes learning to ride for younger children through to teaching more advanced techniques to the older and more accomplished riders.

My time will be divided between curriculum activities, out of school clubs, as well as affiliation with local cycling clubs.

What have I started with?

richard-cycle-trainingI've already taken sessions at Severndale, Sundorne Infants, Belvidere School and helped out with the Mid-Shropshire Wheeler Saturday morning sessions.

Other schools currently 'signed up' include, Harlescott juniors, Greenacres, Hanwood, Grange and Meole Brace Juniors.

Additionally, I am supporting 'Bike It' by helping with some of Kim's training sessions at various schools.
