Celebrating cycling in Shrewsbury

Cycle Shrewsbury project group member, Martin Beardwell invites you to nominate your favourite cycling improvements in Shrewsbury...

martinbeardwellIn the last 25 years or so we, the ordinary cyclists in Shrewsbury, have seen all sorts of changes such as the introduction of dedicated cycle lanes/tracks, national cycle routes, advance stop lines, specialist cycle parking areas and a host of other changes across the town. Some of the changes have not been to the liking of local cyclists; indeed some of those have been abandoned and forgotten but overwhelmingly there are changes that we can celebrate and which have made cycling easier, safer and more enjoyable.

I am an ordinary member of the Cycle Shrewsbury/Connect2 Project Group and it has occurred to me to invite local cyclists to nominate THEIR favourite improvements to cycling in the town. I will draw all your nominations together and present the top 10 to the meeting of Cycle Shrewsbury in January. Obviously I would hope to attract publicity to the nominations and, in turn, I hope that will encourage even more improvements for cyclists in the future.

And so please identify your three preferred developments, big or small, that have been introduced in recent years and which have made your cycling in Shrewsbury safer and/or more enjoyable.

Nominations of preferred schemes should be sent before 31 December 2011, by e-mail only, please, to

cycle.shrewsbury@shropshire.gov.uk

Please keep your nominations simple by stating place and nature of the improvement; examples
might be:

  • two dedicated cycle parking spaces outside Jo Bloggs shop; or
  • the changes to traffic management in Our Street; or
  • a dropped kerb on the footway; or
  • National Cycle Route 81 through the Quarry and elsewhere.

In other words any scheme, whatever its size. I am seeking the usefulness that YOU have experienced.

I look forward to receiving your nominations.

Martin Beardwell
