Kim Williams, our Bike It officer, kept a scrapbook of her first year with Cycle Shrewsbury and 12 primary schools in Shrewsbury. She had a fantastic action packed first year and here are some of the highlights from her scrapbook. The links on this page are pdf downloads.
Read Kim's blog with her top 10 list of things she's has enjoyed over the first year of Bike It here.
Are you a pupil at one of the Bike It schools? What was your highlight of the past year? Email cycle.shrewsbury@shropshire.gov.uk and we might add your comments to this page.
Calendar competition - January 2010All of our Bike It schools entered a competition to design pictures for a Bike It calendar. Each month during 2010 we have featured one of the best pictures from the competition on our 'what's happening at your school' page.
In March 7 school particpated in Sustrans virtual bike race. Our most successful school was Mereside Primary, they finished 89th of the participating schools across the UK and logged an amazing 1295 trips! View all 7 schools' ceritificates on the virtual bike race page from Kim's scrapbook.
One of the pupils at Mereside Primary came up with the idea to line up all the kid's bikes in a row to see how far they would stretch. There were 161 metres of bikes. Have a look at Kim's scrapbook page.
Bike spring cleaning - March/April 2010Kim visited lots of different schools to help pupils spring clean their bikes. It was loads of fun even though it looks pretty cold in the photo's on Kim's scrapbook page!
This is what Liam and Josh from Oakmeadow said about their spring cleaning experience:
"On the 18th March Kim, our School Bike It lady, visited. Everyone who brought their bikes into school was shown how to clean them. This is what we used: buckets of cold water, sponges, clothes, toothbrushes, dishbrushes and soap. She showed us how to scrub everywhere except the chain. Next she showed us the correct way to check and pump up our tyres. Then she put some oil on the chain to make it cleaner and to run freely. Also some policemen came in and put a security mark on our bikes so that if they are stolen and then found they will know whose bike it is. Kim also brought some prizes to assembly."
Kim held an action day fro the Cycle Shrewsbury team and her Bike IT champions at the Shrewsbury sports village, which included making a bicycle out of a pipecleaner - try it, it's fun! View Kim's action day scrapbook page.
Poster competitions - May/June 2010Kim ran 2 poster competitions. The first was to design a poster advising people to wear a helmet. You can see some of the entries from Oxon, Greenacres and Harlescott Junior school pupils here. She was inspired to run a compeitions to design a 'lock your bike' poster after seeing a bike chained to a twig at St George's Junior School! View some of the St George's poster entries here.
Kim has run lots of sessions helping kids to start to ride their bikes once the stabilisers have been removed. Here's a lovely letter from Andrew thanking Kim for helping him cycle without stabilisers.
Here's what Piers and Andrew in Year 1 at Oakmeadow Primary School said:
"It took 20 minutes for me to ride my bike without stabilisers. I really enjoyed riding my bike and I have been to the park on my bike." - Piers
"When I came to school I needed stabilisers, by the end of the lesson I could ride my bike without stabilisers, so now I am really happy." - Andrew
If you need advice on learning how to ride without stabilisers download our handy help-sheet.
Kim joined the rest of the Cycle Shrewsbury team at our annual BikeFest. She was very busy - running stabilisers off sessions and her own Bike It tent where kids could make pipecleaner bikes, inner tube skipping ropes, badges and a huge collage. We also had a big bike shaped cake to celebrate the first year of Bike It!
94 cyclists cycled from Meresdie Primary school to the Quarry for a picnic. All those cyclists was a sight to be beheld as you can see from Kim's scrapbook page for the day!
Kim is really inspirational and very popular with the pupils at the schools where she works. Pupils often do Bike IT projects for Kim. We've uploaded some of the best here:
