Telford Way

The first improvements to the cycle network as a result of the Cycle Shrewsbury campaign were completed on Telford Way in November 2008.

Funding from the Cycle Shrewsbury campaign was used to build new off road cycle paths and footpaths along both sides of Telford Way. In addition, the speed limit along the road was reduced to 40mph and a new toucan crossing was installed at the point where the old canal crosses the road.

The new facilities will make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle between Monkmoor and Sundorne, and have already been welcomed by regular users of the route.

BBC Radio Shropshire’s Jim Hawkins cycled to Telford Way on the 9 December 2008 to officially open the toucan crossing and the new paths for cyclists and pedestrians. Jim has become a keen cyclist since taking up cycling again in Bike Week 2008, and was showing his support for better cycling facilities.

Pupils from St Mary’s School in Castlefields, and representatives from Monkmoor Police Station were also present at the opening.

Jim Hawkins has been amazed at how quick and convenient it is to do some of his regular journeys round town on his bike, and would recommend it to anyone. Read Jim Hawkins' diary to find out how he is getting on training for the Great Big Bike Ride.
