Shropshire Council is implementing measures to make it safer and more convenient to walk and cycle on and around York Road in Harlescott. This area is well-used as a route to three local schools; Greenacres Primary School, Grange Primary School and Grange Secondary School.
Greenacres Primary School has been working closely with Shropshire Council's School Travel Plan team and Cycle Shrewsbury's new Bike It officer, Kim Williams, to look at ways to promote cycling to school. Find out more about Bike It. Parents and pupils have also requested a new link across Kynaston Fields between Rutland and Harlescott Community Centre.

Work began in March to install three separate 'plateaus' to help reduce traffic speeds and create safer crossing points for parents and pupils on York Road.
A new surfaced path has also been constructed on Kynaston Fields which is intended for shared use for both pedestrian and cyclists to use.
Works were completed during May 2010.
The 20mph zone is still under consideration and traffic speeds will be monitored after construction work is complete.

On 15 July 2010, schoolchildren and local councillors helped to officially open the new path across Kynaston Fields.
Celebreations took place at Harlescott Community Centre and included free refreshments, cycle check-ups from Dr Bike and security marking by local police officers.
Spike the hedgehog joined in the fun!
