Cycling proposals in Radbrook and Bowbrook

During 2010, we're hoping to make improvements to some popular cycling and walking routes between Radbrook and Bowbrook. The proposals include:

Mytton Oak Road Toucan crossing

What is proposed?

  • A new signalised crossing for cyclists Mytton_Oak_Rdand pedestrians to the west of the main Hospital roundabout
  • Widening of the path between Mytton Oak Road and Falcons Way to provide a segregated walking and cycling route

Why?

  • This is already a well-used link between Gains Park and Radbrook, and is particularly useful for children attending schools on Longden Road
  • New housing is due to be constructed on the old RSH south site - the new crossing will provide a safer route for the new residents (and existing residents of Falcons Way) to the local health centre and primary school on Racecourse Lane.

Radbrook Road Toucan crossing

What is proposed?

  • A new signalised crossing for cyclists and Radbrook_Rdpedestrians between the junctions of Crowmeole Lane and Bank Farm Road

  • Reduction in speed limit from 40mph to 30mph

  • Mini roundabout at the junction of Radbrook Road and Bank Farm Road

Why?

  • This is already a well-used link between Gains Park, Copthorne and Radbrook, and is particularly useful for children attending schools on Longden Road and staff travelling to the RSH
  • Existing traffic speeds are high
  • The mini roundabout will help to reduce speeds and help provide more opportunies for traffic exiting Bank Farm Road

Following consultation on this proposal in April 2010, detailed design work has now been commissioned.

Crowmeole Lane - changes in priority

What is proposed?

  • Changes in priority at the junctions of Crowmeole_LaneCrowmeole Lane with Sandiway and Rad Valley Road

Why?

  • Crowmeole Lane is used by many people, including pedestrians and cyclists, and through traffic. It becomes very narrow at the Radbrook bridge, and there is no pavement on this section. The changes in priority are aimed at making the route less attractive as a through route whilst slowing down traffic on the approach to the bridge. Slower speeds should help to make the route safer for pedestrians and cyclists

There was not enough support for this proposal from the consultation in April 2010, so no changes will be made on Crowmeole Lane.
